Ruts Youth 3 Cheam 3

Tonights rematch gave the Ruts the chance to avenge the recent reverse against Cheam.

Ruts were missing two players, both Calums were unavailable for tonight’s game and will be back to strengthen us further next time out.

The opening 10 minutes were evenly contested with both sides coming to terms with the solid surface. Cheam began to press the Ruts defence of Tommy and Aksel with Ciaran making some great early saves.

The opening goal was well deserved as the Cheam forward planted a well taken finish just out of reach of Ciaran between the sticks.

This galvanised the Ruts and they began to threaten with the industrious Rio giving the Ruts a much needed outlet. Alf showed his true potential tonight and was closing every opponent down and using the ball wisely.

The increased tempo gave Conner the impetus to start bossing the midfield. It was this increased work rate that paid dividends as Conner showed his strength and composure to force home the equaliser from close range.

At the turnaround Ruts unleashed new signing Oscar into the game. He was joined by Jamie and George as the Ruts settled down to put the game to bed. Against the run of play Cheam caused mayhem in the Ruts rearguard and the forward prodded home. Giving Ciaran no chance.

The game remained at 2-1 for a short while with Ciaren once again proving his quality by producing some game saving stops.

Jamie and Oscar were beginning to gel as a partnership and caused the Cheam defender to handle just outside the area. Up stepped Jamie and dispatched the freekick high into the net to equalise again.

Ruts switched off as they were still celebrating their goal and allowed Cheam to retake the lead from the restart.

The final ten minutes saw Harrison and George driving the team forward and providing the team with steady heads in midfield. Once again the work rate proved fruitful as Jamie skipped down the right wing and produced a killer cross which the Cheam defender turned into his own net.

The Ruts now had their opportunity to push on and win the game and began throwing everything at Cheam. A frantic final few minutes saw the crowd reach fever pitch as they pushed for the winner.

In the final minute the ball was pinballing around in the Cheam area with an array of shots and blocks. The ball popped out to the ever improving Alfie who caught the ball cleanly and sent it goal bound. The keeper was beaten all ends up but a miraculous goal line clearance from the Cheam defender put a stop to Alfie’s celebrations.

So the match ended with a 3-3 draw, both teams should be proud of themselves. Ruts showed they are more than capable of winning games at this level and will continue to work hard and build on this. Superb effort from the lads, the elusive first win is surely only around the corner.
